JAVA is the embryo of the existence of the Institute of Museum Affairs Sonobudoyo. Namely, an organization that studied the Javanese culture in which members are drawn from white people and Indonesia. Th ir Karsten was the architect of a plan of the building. Having collected several collections of cultural objects from Java, Madura, Bali and Lombok, finally on the date 6 November 1935, Sonobudoyo Museum was inaugurated by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII, which occupies the former offices Schauten on the north side of North Square of Sultan of Yogyakarta.
Until now, the museum has 42,698 Sonobudoyo collection consisting of 10 categories, namely collection geologika, biology, ethnography, arkeologika, historika, numismatika, filologika, keramologi, art and teknologika. In addition to the showroom as a place to display collections of objects, the Museum Sonobudoyo also equipped with an auditorium, storage collections, libraries, laboratorum, preparation, offices and public facilities.
Manapakkan pendapa foot into the museum, which is the oldest building in the complex of museums, will be found 3 devices gamelan. A set of ancient Gamelan Kyai Mega Mendhung from Cirebon Kraton Kasepuhan occupies the western side, while the 2 devices slendro pelog gamelan Kyai and Nyai Riris Sweet (made at the time of Sri Sultan HB VI,-ed) that bergya Mataram located on the east side.

After the Batik Room, a collection can be seen in the Puppet Room. In this room we can know a variety missions puppet show that not always play the hero Mahabharata and Ramayana. Central Java space filled with a collection of wooden handicrafts, silver and metal as well as a variety of equipment means the complete life cycle ceremonies as part of the community traditions of Central Java.
